A mainstay in Cairns’ multicultural food scene has opened yet another outlet, serving the same food but with something different for diners.

Spicy Bite’s new Cairns city restaurant, Spicy Bite Fusion, opened on Wednesday night with a menu that offers a “Western twist” on the chain’s well-loved Indian cuisine.

Co-owner Subash Chetry said the venue will also offer Nepalese dishes including momo dumplings as well as modern Indian and continental food.

“There’s a lot of demand for a little bit of a twist … we’ll have more innovations, different tastes,” he said.

“We will also have the set menu where you can enjoy most of the beautiful curries, it’s up to you what you want to taste.”

The licenced business is large enough to host 150 diners.

Daulat Singh Panwar, another co-owner and the driving force behind Spicy Bite’s successful 15-year history, said the new restaurant had a “party hall” space at the back plus smaller tables at the front and streetside.

“We have a lot of catering, we have a lot of parties … I decided we needed more space, so that’s why we moved here,” he said.

Already the business has several major events booked in this month while the kitchen, amid renovations to get the restaurant up and running, has been making hundreds of free meals for flood-impacted residents.

The new store replaces the franchise’s Esplanade outlet however that business will continue to run under the same group, rebranded as ‘Spicy India’.

Mr Singh Panwar, a chef of almost 32 years, opened the first Spicy Bite in the Gold Coast before launching in Townsville and later Cairns.

He now has a hand in operating restaurants in Earlville, Smithfield, Edge Hill and Cairns city.

“He has a lot of loyal customers, they even move their birthday parties to when he has availability so that he can cook for them,” Mr Chetry said.

Mr Chetry and the wider Spicy Bite group have been heavily involved in the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin Cairns chapter as it has supported people impacted by the recent ex-TC Jasper disaster.

GOPIO fundraised and garnered about 20 volunteers who together have been donating hot meals to people in the northern beaches, months on from the December floods.

Spicy Bite Fusion on 39 Lake Street is open for lunch and dinner, seven days per week.
