Queensland records 10,953 new COVID-19 cases

CAIRNS city, Smithfield-Trinity Beach and Moorobool-Kanimbla have had some of the highest numbers of Covid cases in the Far North, new data shows.

New Queensland Health Covid-19 data has revealed the number of infections recorded in each suburb (SA2 area) across the state since the start of the Omicron wave in mid-December.

It comes as cases across the Far North and Cape York soar in the wake of the Queensland border opening on December 13.

Cairns city has recorded 138 cases between then and January 4, while Smithfield-Trinity Beach and Mooroobool- Kanimbla have both had 61.

Further north, Port Douglas is sitting on the same number.

The Far North has now tallied more than 2000 cases of Covid since the pandemic started, 555 of which were recorded on Friday.

Cairns is a virtual lockdown as offices, tourism businesses, shops and sports competitions shut due to infections and isolation periods.

Cases have also spread across Cape York and the Torres Strait, while the virus is confirmed in Yarrabah as well.

The new data pinpoints the infected person’s locaion of usual residence.

While a number of suburbs appear to have reduced or no cases, several thousand cases recorded by Queensland Health have not been allocated a suburb or are under investigation.
