Police are appealing for information about a man charged with a string of fraud-related crimes and forgery who they believe may have targeted residents living within the Cairns area.

They have released an image of a 32-year-old man who identified himself as Paul Sorin Kimpian.

The man is now behind bars after appearing in the Brisbane Magistrates Court and is understood to have not entered a plea.

He is described as being of Romanian appearance, about 184cm tall, balding with dark brown hair and a moustache.

It’s believed he may also be known by the names Roman Janecek and Jean Paul Fontaine.

Police believe the man may frequent the Brisbane and Gold Coast regions and travel via public transport.

Investigations into the alleged fraudster have led police to believe the man may have recently targeted Cairns locals after potentially travelling to the Far North.

“Police encourage anyone who notices fraudulent transactions on their accounts to immediately notify their financial institution, then report the matter to police and seek any personal support you may need,” a statement said.

“Anyone with information that may assist ongoing investigations, including the man’s identity and residence, or anyone connected to him, is encouraged to contact police.”

The man has been remanded in custody and is expected to reappear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 24.

Fraud offences within the Far Northern Police Region have trended downward in recent years after a 20 year high in 2019 of 1708 offences.

Last year, a total of 1249 fraud offences were recorded, according to Queensland Police Service data.
