A MAJOR business milestone will be achieved later this month when a team of passionate hair care professionals open the doors on a repurposed Cairns building as the city’s newest hair salon.

When Claire Yeh and Ray Liu made the move from Taiwan to Kewarra Beach, they set up a home salon – but now after two years the hair care duo have outgrown their suburban studio and will open a purpose fitted-out facility closer to the city.

In two short years the former Taipei City residents amassed a client base of between 250 and 300 customers and it was clear a bigger space was needed.

When the Captain Cook Seafoods business at the corner of Sheridan and Lily streets came up for sale, the couple jumped at the prime Cairns North piece of real estate.

“We completely gutted everything and everything is new,” Claire Yeh said.

“We have two basins for washing, they are completely electric, they recline and lie flat. And we have a private spa room for a head spa.”

In a first for the business, the new Cairns North salon will offer scalp massage that hits pressure points to increase blood flow in a popular Asian treatment called a head spa.

“We do exfoliation and pressure point massage and treat scalp conditions and we do neck and shoulder and arm massage with aromatherapy. But we don’t do body massage yet,” Ms Yeh said.

“A hair style and blow wave will complete the service.”

A commercial make-up artist working in the film and TV industry, Ms Yeh was trained in New Zealand before moving back to Taipei City where she met her husband Ray Liu.

The name of the new salon Gao-Mi Hair and Makeup comes from Mr Liu’s grandmother’s first Taipei City salon.

“She asked us to strive to be noble in spirit and always excel at our endeavour. At the same time we should remain humble, grateful, down-to-earth and we will be blessed with an unlimited source of stability,” Ms Yeh said.

The new salon owners hoped a loyal customer base, including clients that travelled from Townsville and the Whitsundays would assure the new venture’s success.

“We are so excited,” she said.

“We do have a lot of Asian clientele. We also have clients from Airlie Beach.

“We have some clients already confirmed (to attend) the (opening) party to celebrate a new step forward.”

Friday July 15 has been locked in as the new salon’s grand opening at 351 Sheridan St, Cairns North.
