FISHMONGERS across Cairns are gearing up for a big Easter with plenty of tourists in town and locals clamouring for freshly-caught reef fish.
Peter Adams of Ocean World Seafood Market, which will be open on Good Friday, said wild caught barramundi and saddletail snapper were best sellers.
“We concentrate on local fresh fish and I think people look for local species rather than frozen, imported fish from the supermarkets, all our fish is fresh,” Mr Adams said.
“Coral trout is our premium product, and there’s been good catches of barramundi.
He said the prawn season had started slowly but Tiger prawns were looking good and Endeavour prawns were also available.
“I think Cairns will have a good holiday period and we expect to be quite busy.”
Annabel’s Bakery in North Cairns will have one of its busiest days on Thursday with families stocking up on hot cross buns.
Manager Erin Hutton said spice was the secret to a good hot cross bun.
“Lots of spice, and fruit,” she said.
“They are very popular, considering supermarkets have had them since Boxing Day – I think ours are better.
“Thursday will be our biggest bun day of the year, it should be pretty busy,” Ms Hutton said.
