Nerang man, 41, in hospital after car crashed into Bungalow power pole and caused an outage

A car snapped a power pole when the driver failed to negotiate a roundabout, causing a power outage for hundreds of homes.

It was a case of an unhappy start to the new year for one man after a vehicle he was in struck a Cairns power pole and snapped it in two and, causing a blackout in the immediate area.

According to emergency responders, the vehicle crashed into a pole on the corner of Buchan St and Scott St, Bungalow. at 7.18pm on January 1.

Police said the occupant of the crashed vehicle was a 41-year-old man from Nerang on the Gold Coast.

Social media updates from Ergon Energy via its Outage Finder revealed that it estimated the unplanned oputage would be restored to the 324 residents by 6am on Monday.

“The loss of power is due to public safety concerns,” the energy provider posted.

A Queensland Ambulance Service representative said paramedics attended the incident which involved a single vehicle into a pole.

“One stable patient was transported to Cairns Hospital after a single-vehicle crash into a pole on the corner of Buchan Street and Scott Street at 7.18pm,” the representative said.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman confirmed officers attended the incident.

“A vehicle failed to negotiate a roundabout and struck a power pole.” she said.

“The power pole snapped, power lines came down and power was lost in the immediate area.

“Police are continuing to investigate the incident, which involved a 45-year-old man from Nerang.”

The man who was transported to Cairns Hospital is understood to have also undergone mandatory testing.
