A Cairns childcare worker who was sacked over an assault allegation involving a four-year-old child and a mop will not face criminal charges.
Nationwide childcare provider Mayfield Early Learning sacked a teacher on July 25, the day after the incident at the White Rock centre.
The incident was reported to authorities, however, it can now be revealed the childcare educator will not face criminal charges after Queensland Police finalised its investigation into the assault allegation.
Mother Alyssa Moore said she immediately pulled her four-year-old out of the Fretwell Rd centre and was not satisfied with the way the incident had been dealt with.
The retail worker has also questioned why a letter went out to parents stating the worker left due to “personal reasons”, before issuing a second statement outlining more in depth reasons for the termination.
She said the whole incident had taken a toll on her family and son who had been significantly impacted.
“It has been a struggle,” she said.
“I was trying to look at (getting him into a new centre) but I’m really nervous to have him in there. (my son) said, ‘What if the teacher is naughty?’.”
Mayfield Early Learning operates 45 centres Australia-wide, including five in Cairns.
In a statement to the Cairns Post, the company said the worker was stood down, “effective immediately”, after being notified of the incident
“We are actively working with Queensland Police and have reported to our relevant authorities,” a spokeswoman said.
The latest childcare allegation follows the shut down of centres in the Northern Peninsula Area of Cape York by Education Queensland after an educator, in an unrelated case, was charged with 71 offences, including 62 counts of common assault, eight counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one count of torture.
