Handcuffed and flanked by detectives, a man has arrived in Cairns after being extradited from South Australia to face alleged historical sex offences.

The 75-year-old man, who cannot be named, arrived at Cairns Airport on Thursday morning before being loaded into a paddy wagon and taken to the Cairns watch house.

Under Queensland law, people accused of serious sexual offences cannot be named in media reports until they are committed to stand trial.

The man’s arrest followed police investigations into historic sexual assault incidents alleged to have happened in Cairns.

Cairns Child Protection and Investigation Unit detectives were assisted by South Australian detectives to execute a search warrant at the man’s Ceduna address where he was arrested and taken into custody.

The man has been charged with 25 counts of rape, 11 counts of indecent assault, one count of deprivation of liberty.

Police will allege the incidents, reported to officers in October 2021, took place in Cairns between 1978 and 1979.

The man’s matter was briefly heard in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon before Magistrate Gelma Meoli.

Defence counsel Bebe Mellick told the court his client would make an application for bail on Friday.

“There will be an application for bail, if it’s convenient to the court and the prosecution to adjourn these matters to court one tomorrow or alternatively, another court,” he said.

“It is quite lengthy and I expect it will take at least half an hour.”

The police prosecutor made no objection and Magistrate Meoli remanded the man in custody to reappear via video link on Friday morning.
