Man arrested after driving on to Palm Cove jetty with replica firearm

A man believed to be armed with a fake gun has been arrested after driving to the end of a jetty in Far North Queensland, and swimming towards a nearby island.

A man believed to be armed with a fake gun has been arrested after he drove to the end of a Far North Queensland jetty and began swimming towards a nearby island.

Police were called to the Palm Cove jetty about 7am on Wednesday morning.

It is understood police saw the man acting erratically, removing his shirt, before he entered the water and started swimming towards Double Island.

Bystanders captured the moment the man was arrested on the beach.

A Queensland Police Service media spokeswoman confirmed a man possibly in his 50s had been taken into custody and would be assessed for possible medical treatment.
