Major delays as car catches ablaze on Kuranda Range road

Passengers travelling up the Kuranda range road have narrowly escaped injury as the car they were travelling in caught fire quickly becoming engulfed in flames.

Fire crews were called to the Kennedy Highway on the Kuranda Range road near Streets creek at 5.55pm after a car caught fire.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman confirmed Police and fire fighters were still on the scene at 6:30.

“The fire was well involved when crews arrived and they are still working to extinguish the fire,” she said.

“All of the occupants have been able to exit the vehicle and police are also on scene conducting traffic control.”

At 6.45 QFES reported that the fire had been extinguished and crews were dampening down the scene as a tow vehicle was organised.

Pictures from the scene show a Nissan SUV engulfed in flames in the middle of traffic going up the range.

The incident is causing major delays for evening commuters with traffic backed up all the way down the range according to posts on social media.

“Car on fire past the merge lane going up, 2nd stop and go. Traffic backed all the way down,” Tash Chapman posted on facebook.

At 6.58pm QLDTraffic was advising drivers to expect delays as the road is reopened.
