Police have charged six people, including five teenage boys, after a savage alleged assault in Mareeba that resulted in three other men being rushed to hospital with serious injuries. Watch the full video.

Horrific vision of a Mareeba altercation has emerged as police reveal they have charged six people, including five teenage boys, in relation to an alleged Byrnes St assault.

Three men were hospitalised with serious injuries after the incident.

One of the victims – Dan, a local farm worker – was celebrating his 34th birthday that night. He said he and his friend were celebrating in Mareeba on Saturday, April 29, when they were caught up in a brutal bashing.

“We were in the Ant Hill when we saw a lot of kids fighting with a group of seasonal workers. A few of the kids decided to storm the pub, so the pub closed up. We then started making our way up (the street),” Dan said.

“Me and my friend were walking ahead of this older guy. We heard a commotion because a couple of (people) had singled him out. We tried to get him away from them.

“More and more of them started arriving, a couple quickly turned into six or eight. They were whistling to each other to bring more people down. It blew up so quick.”

Dan said he and his friend were quickly sucked into the altercation; he said he was knocked unconscious. He said he was discharged from hospital at 4am the following day. He said his friend was flown to Cairns Hospital.

“I was out for a good few minutes. By the time I woke up, police and paramedics were there,” he added.

“My friend had four-and-a-half hours of surgery where they tried to reattach the nerves in his neck. He’s gained a bit of movement back at the mouth, but he’s still having trouble with his eyes and needs to see a specialist.

“He just got a job with us, but he won’t be able to work for a while.”

Dan said he had recently witnessed other incidents in Mareeba where groups of people had quickly escalated to violence when confronted.

“When police are trying to arrest someone on the street, they just run in from everywhere. People are getting really sick of it,” he said.

A police spokeswoman said police will allege a group of people were involved in an altercation inside a licensed premises on Byrnes St about 9pm on April 29.

“Later that night, about 11pm, three men were walking along Byrnes St when they were allegedly approached by the same group of people,” the spokeswoman said.

“A physical altercation between the three men and group allegedly ensued, with glass bottles allegedly thrown at the men.

“The group of people left the scene prior to police arrival.

“A 29-year-old man suffered serious facial injuries and was flown to Cairns Hospital.

“A 34-year-old man was knocked unconscious, and a 45-year-old man suffered bruising. Both were transported to hospital.”

The spokeswoman said six people were charged after the alleged serious assault.

“A 27-year-old man has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while in company, one count of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed, four counts of fraud … and one count each of commit public nuisance … he is expected to appear before Mareeba Magistrates Court on May 29,” she said.

“A 15-year-old boy was dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.

“A 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy have each been charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm while in company.

“A second 14-year-old boy has been charged with one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm while in company and possessing dangerous drugs – cannabis.

“A third 14-year-old boy has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while in company and one count of commit public nuisance … and one count of breach of bail. His bail was refused.

“They will appear before Mareeba Children’s Court.

“Investigations remain ongoing.”
