A highly-anticipated fast food restaurant has updated its plans to open a Cairns restaurant.

CAIRNS foodies will have to wait a bit longer for the rapidly growing Mexican fast food chain Guzman y Gomez to arrive.

The restaurant was expected to open a Cairns drive-through store by June 2022, but it has provided an update that says this is not the case.

At the moment the store is still in the pipeline, but it will no longer open in June.

A new opening date is expected to be announced soon by the GYG team.

In June it was announced the store was going to take the place of Westpac, NAB and RACQ banks at the Stockland Cairns Shopping Centre in Earlville to build the dine-in and drive- through restaurant.

The store is known for its freshly prepared burritos, nachos, tacos and burrito bowls.

Meanwhile, a Cairns Post call-out to readers over Facebook has shown they really want Guzman y Gomez.

Another restaurant they also want back is Nando’s.

Nando’s on Abbott Street closed its doors after ten years in business in 2019.

But the readers have shown that they want it back.

Gavin Broomhead commented about his desire to bring back the chicken franchise.

“It’s like a 3rd world city without its glorious chicken,” Mr Broomhead said.

“It was a travesty when it closed down in Cairns.

“Have to get my fix whenever I’m in Townsville or Brisbane.”

Another reader said she really wanted the fast food restaurant.

“Nando’s, Nando’s, Nando’s. Because chicken ribs are life,” Amber Storer commented.

There were many comments to bring it back already.

While some people were calling for other restaurants including the old school Pizza Hut, Buffet restaurants and Mad Max.

“All you can eat restaurant sounds good,” Tanzy Griffith said.

“Mad Mex needs a home in Cairns,” Kerrie Parton commented.

Some readers wanted to look past fast food restaurants and suggested a popular dessert cocktail bar in Brisbane.

The popular place known for its cow-like features and decadent dessert has opened up multiple bars in South East Queensland.

Laura Miller tagged Cowch to grab some attention.

“Cowch, I hope you see this post and love Abbey and I have for you,” she said.

“Please come to Cairns, we are begging you!!!”

Cowch, Mad Mex and Nando’s have been contacted for comment.
