Two student teams from Cairns School of Distance Education face the ultimate test as they compete for coveted spots at world robotics championships.
Students will travel to the VEX Robotics national championships in Adelaide this weekend.
The competition is designed to foster students’ STEM skills and interest through robotics challenges, and is held at regional, state, national and global levels.
CSDE students participated in multiple workshops to design, build and code robots for the competition.
The junior team, consisting of CSDE students Finn, Zaya and Hannah, competed in the Far North Queensland VEX IQ robotics competition, placing first in the team alliance finals and earning their way into the national championships.
The senior team, made up of secondary students Fred, Rory, Natalis and Justene competed in the state championships of the VEX V5 Push Back competition, and secured their national spot after making the semi-finals.
Teacher and STEM activities coordinator Yolanda Tandy said the students’ progression from regional and state levels to the national stage was a testament to their “dedication and talent”.
“We are incredibly proud of our robotics team and their outstanding achievements throughout the 2025 season,” Ms Tandy said.
“Their creativity, adaptability, perseverance, and resilience have been evident as they tackled every challenge head-on.
“From designing and building to coding and driving, their teamwork and technical skills have truly shone.”
Top competitors at the national competition will earn the chance to compete at the world championships in the United States in 2026.
