Five-generation farming family continues tradition at school formal
A Mt St Bernard College student has honoured her grandmother and five generations of farming history, riding into her school formal on a tractor.

A young woman has honoured her grandmother and five generations of farming history, riding into her school formal on a tractor.
Granddaughter to the Jonsson’s Farm Market family, Sophie Jonsson with date Tom Kleemann rode into Cairns City on Friday night on a John Deere 8225R tractor, escorted by her father Bradley Jonsson, for the Mt St Bernard College Year 12 celebration at the Reef Hotel Casino.
Sophie’s grandmother Gail Jonsson said seeing her granddaughter reminded her of her own wedding 42 years ago, where she and her bridesmaids rode in on tractors.
“I said to my grandmother we were going to use tractors and she was a bit horrified,” Mrs Jonsson said.
“The men spent two days polishing them all up.
“It was a very special time,” she said
Mrs Jonsson also said her granddaughter’s grand entrance had turned many heads.
“Everyone was quite surprised, I don’t think they’d ever had a tractor there before,” she said.
“Being farmers and a farm girl that’s what she wanted.”
The talented graduate was given the 2023 Dux award on the night and plans to study a dual degree in Agribusiness and Agricultural science in Brisbane next year.
“We’re very proud of her, she’s a lovely girl and very sensible,” her grandmother said.
“She works on the farm and gets her hands dirty.
“She’s got a bright future, and we look forward to watching her grow.”
