First Nations theatre program Dare to Dream is hitting the road again, taking its I Gut This Feeling production to five remote Far North communities.
Through a modern fairytale story, I Gut this Feeling aims to teach young people the importance of staying safe, speaking up if you see something that isn’t right and trusting your instincts.
“We’re conveying the message of how to feel safe within yourself and the area that you’re in, and how to help decide what you’re feeling inside,” Sheyan Walker, a lead actor in the play, said.
Dare to Dream is an initiative from the JUTE Theatre Company.
“I Gut This Feeling” is its first touring performance of 2024, and will be visiting Cooktown, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Croydon and Mornington Island in May and June.
In an innovative approach, the show has a foldable set which allows it to be packed up and transported in a single ute.
As well as performing, the play’s cast will hold workshops with kids in each community they visit.
Creative producer Monica Stevens said Dare to Dream provided messages of hope to children in remote areas.
“When visiting First Nations communities, JUTE’s touring team members become role models for young people,” Ms Stevens said.
A public preview was held at Bulmba-ja Arts Centre in Cairns on Friday May 3.
The show hits the road on May 13 with Cooktown its first stop.
