A MULTINATIONAL electric scooter and ride share company plans to expand its operations into a Far North tourist hot spot, but there are some places they might not be wanted.

Beam, which operates in multiple cities across Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, Malaysia, and South Korea, plans to roll into Port Douglas this month bringing their array of scooters to designated spots across the seaside village.

Company spokesman Michelle Leong said residents and tourists would soon have access to their service at resorts and several pick up and drop-off points.

“Beam is excited to be landing in Port Douglas later this month and introducing residents and visitors to Port Douglas to our industry-leading e-scooters,” she said.

“We are committed to providing a safe, affordable and eco-friendly mode of transport for the Port Douglas community.”

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr welcomed the transport alternative but said more details would be hashed on where exactly the scooters can operate.

He said he didn’t think it was suitable for the electric scooters to be “whizzing up and down Macrossan Street”.

“They’re probably not suitable for that, so we still have to discuss some finer details and how they will work,” he said.

“But I think on balance they are a positive thing.

“I’m sure a lot of tourists at the resorts, which is where I believe some of the stations will be, will find them a good transport alternative.”

Beam recently launched their service in Townsville and have “big innovations” planned for Port Douglas.

Ms Leong said more information about the Far North operations would be released soon. The company is also still working with Douglas Shire Council planners.

“In addition, we’re looking forward to engaging with local businesses to stimulate tourism and the economy at a local level, understanding that micromobility must serve the needs of not only the people who use our service, but also the people who don’t,” she said.
