An award-winning children’s entertainer and the first female member of the Wiggles Emma Memma is returning to Cairns on April 6, with her exciting new show, Dance Party Island.
Emma Watkins, who performs as Emma Memma, says the best part about Far North Queensland is the audience.
“Most of the comments we get are along the lines of, ‘Is that the real Emma!?’ It’s always so special because we don’t get to come to Cairns often. So when we finally do, it’s a huge celebration for everyone – including us,” she said.
Describing the energy in the audience as “full of joy,” Ms Watkins says she enjoys connecting with the Cairns crowd on a personal level.
“I love walking through the audience and saying hello to everyone. It’s wonderful to chat with all the families who come along to be part of the fun,” she said.
The songs in Emma Memma’s new show are designed to get everyone moving.
“Our new album, releasing this month, continues our theme of beach party fun. We’re celebrating marine life, packing our beach trolleys, and even dancing with snapping crocodiles!” Ms Watkins said.
“We’re so excited to share this new music on our tour and can’t wait to see who dresses up as their favourite marine animal – jellyfish, turtles, starfish, crabs.”
This show holds a special place in Emma Memma’s heart, as she shares an exciting behind-the-scenes secret with her Cairns fans.
“Take a close look at the jellyfish umbrellas, which are a new addition to the show for our song Jellyfish Blob,” she revealed.
“They were handmade by my mum ... thanks mum.”
Emma’s mum spent two months sewing fabric, wool, sparkly string, and tulle onto each umbrella, creating a dazzling “tentacle spectacular” to add an extra touch of magic to the performance.
She believes as children’s content creators, it’s crucial to include everyone.
“Children often use their bodies to express themselves before they start speaking, or they might continue to rely on visual language. Our goal as the Emma Memma team is to share as much visual language as possible, so children who need visual language support can feel seen and understood by those around them,” Ms Watkins said.
