HEALTH authorities have warned the third wave of Covid is hitting the Far North and is expected to get worse.

“We are definitely into the third wave here in the Far North. We are not going to get away from it. Over the last couple weeks Covid cases has doubled and we will see that get worse in time,” Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service chief executive Dr Jeremy Wellwood said.

“It’s a very stressful time for the community.

“We knew it was going to happen in winter, I think the people of Cairns are ready and they know what they need to do.

“If you are crook you shouldn’t be out and about, make sure you wash your hands, keep your distance and if you can’t keep that distance feel free to wear that mask.”

Dr Wellwood said the number of cases in Cairns was large.

“Cairns has been disproportionately affected with Covid but we have an international airport and the support we’ve provided to Papua New Guinea,” he said.

“We’ve had more cases coming to us and into the ICU.”
