Cairns Regional Council: Lagoon closed for maintenance

The city’s most popular public tourist attraction will close during arguably the peak tourist season for maintenance.

THE much-loved Esplanade Lagoon will be closed for three weeks for maintenance.

Cairns Regional Council Mayor Bob Manning said it would close from July 18 to August 8.

The maintenance program will include repairs and upgrades to the pool’s surface, lighting, pump systems, and amenities.

“The pool and its surrounds need major maintenance every two years to keep that area looking and operating at its best,” Cr Manning said.

“Without this maintenance, our lagoon wouldn’t be the star attraction that it is.

“While, there’s never a good time to close the lagoon, the maintenance program has been scheduled in the cooler months when usage is at its lowest and to avoid school holidays when we see southern tourists flocking to Cairns for the warmth.”

The Lagoon will need to be drained for some of the maintenance to be completed.

Sand will be replenished and the fish sculptures will be cleaned and polished as part of the project.

The amenities building will also be closed for the same period as the lagoon.

Alternative public toilets are located in Fogarty Park.
