The fierce rivalry between FNQ riders was on display when Cairns Cycling Club athletes competed on the track in the Townsville Cup on Wheels over the weekend.

Cairns Cycling Club head coach Richie Bates said all their riders performed extremely well against intense competition.

“In the Men’s A Grade Keirin, the Hutton brothers, David and Brandon dominated and came first and second respectively,” he said.

“Then in the Men’s C Grade Keirin, Greg Hutton came first and John Thompson third and Don Huyser won the Men’s D Grade.”

Bates said the club riders worked hard to make their places on the podium for elite, junior and masters category races at the event which was from October 21 to 22 at Townsville Velodrome.

At the 2022 Townsville Cup on Wheels, Cairns Cycling Club rider Gabby Thomasz (top right silver helmet) was second when she raced against Caitlan Corset (left) who won and her sister Stephanie Corset (lower right) placed third in the Women's A Grade Keirin at Townsville Velodrome.

Rider Gabby Thomasz, who won the Port Douglas Gran Fondo Women’s Sprint event, claimed second place in the Women’s A Grade Keirin behind Caitlin Corset in first and sister Stephanie Corset in third place.

The Townsville-based Corset sisters have a strong pedigree as mum Ruth won the 2012 and 2014 National Road Series, and Thomasz said they showed massive determination in the event.

CCC’s Lucy Heffernan came a speedy second in the Womens B Grade Keirin and second again in the Women’s Cup on Wheels.

In the Men’s Cup on Wheels, Liam Scott was second with Brandon Hutton in third.

Meanwhile, Chloe Buckley, 13, rode strongly to take a fourth in the Womens feature handicap, behind teammate Kirra Rayner in second and ahead of Thomasz in fifth.
