THOUSANDS of fashionable punters made the Cairns Cup Ladies Day a stylish success on Saturday, setting the scene for a run of big occasions at the Cannon Park track.
With the big Cairns Cup meeting this Saturday and Cairns Amateurs to follow in September, a record crowd had the venue buzzing with excitement.
Punter Kayleigh Mills enjoyed the social event and said her betting choices had paid off too.
“I won every race, all the favourites,” she said.
Cairns Jockey club general manager John Cameron said the club was impressed with the first half of the Cairns Cup celebration.
“It has been a beautiful day for races, really good fields. It’s unusual for us to have 10 races on Cup Day which means the first day has record prize money for this club and it all leads to next week where we are expecting record crowds,” he said.
“There is a lot of really good races happening and we are very pleased.”
Attendee Krystal Weber was dressed up and enjoying a day with friends.
“It’s been an absolute great day here,” she said.
“We are here to have a good time, dress up and to have some drinks.”
A whopping $25,000 in fashion prizes were up for grabs in the fashion stakes, courtesy of sponsor Myer.
Cairns Jockey Club treasurer Greg Stanton said the turnout was looking much larger than previous ladies day events.
“Numbers are up on last year,” he said.
“Ladies day is usually generally quiet but this is very busy so we are extremely happy.”
Cairns Jockey Club operations manager Cameron Riches said the fashion events were quite popular with many people turning up in impressive frocks.
“The fashions on the field had an excellent turnout with many different entrants involved,” he said.
“There will be more fashion on the field events happening next week for people to be involved in where we are expecting larger crowds.”
Pink was the standout colour for Christine Cross when she was crowned classic lady winner of the day.
Shades of blue also seemed to be a popular colour for many outfits.
Mareeba Shire Mayor Anglea Toppin was among the attendees enjoying the atmosphere.
“I think it’s an amazing day, the weather is with us and everyone is having fun which is what it is all about like everything post Covid everyone is just happy to be out again,” said Cr Toppin.
