“By separating bike and vehicle traffic, the project will improve safety, especially for local school communities, walkers, bike riders, and runners.

“The project will deliver a bikeway south of Cairns from Blackfellow Creek, Edmonton to Ruth Street, Woree, linking to other completed and planned cycleways.

Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the project supported local jobs across the Far North, and would link up with the off-road cycleway being constructed as part of the $481 million Edmonton to Gordonvale (E2G) project.

“Once all stages are complete, we’ll see around 20 km of direct cycleway from Gordonvale all the way through to the Cairns CBD

Member for Cairns Michael Healy said it is a welcome addition in active transport for the city linking the southern suburbs to the central business district.

“The bikeway will be built in two packages. The first stretching from Blackfellow Creek to Anderson Road overpass and the second linking Anderson Road overpass to Ruth Street.

“At Ruth Street, the cycleway will connect with the new shared pathway completed as part of the Cairns Southern Access Corridor – Stage Four: Kate Street to Aumuller Street project.”

Will you be using the new cycleway when complete and would you like to see more dedicated bike paths across the city? Let us know in the comments.
