UPDATE MAY 18: An update on the investigation into the death of a much-loved Innisfail grandmother who was tragically killed on the Bruce Highway earlier this month has been revealed by the police.

Spirited adventurer and admired grandmother, Bernice Prats, died on May 3 after a trailer of a truck smashed onto her campervan at Goolboo.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators put out an appeal to speak to the driver of a large truck that was travelling in front of the caravan, which they have since done.

“Police have identified all parties involved in the crash, including the truck driver,” a Queensland Police spokesman said.

Ms Prats, 80, was the sole occupant of the campervan when it crashed on the Bruce Highway, south of Innisfail. She died at the scene.

The forensic crash unit is continuing its investigations over the incident and could not comment further.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY: Queensland Police have confirmed an elderly woman in critical condition has died after a serious crash involving a truck.

A QPS spokesman said the woman died on the scene when the crash occurred at 12.15 pm, on the Bruce Hwy at Goolboo, about 20 minutes south of Innisfail.

Preliminary police investigations revealed the woman was travelling north in a small campervan when she collided with the trailer of a truck that was travelling south.

The elderly local woman was the sole occupant of the campervan and died at the scene.

And the trailer of the truck headed south also hit a four-wheel-drive travelling behind the campervan.

However, the driver and passenger of the truck and the driver of the four-wheel-drive were not physically injured in the incident.

Investigators would like to speak with the driver of a large truck that was travelling in front of the campervan, and was not involved in the collision.

Forensic Crash Unit investigators are also appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam vision of the vehicles travelling on the highway to contact police.

The Bruce Highway is closed in both directions with diversions currently in place.

Northbound traffic is being diverted at the Silkwood-Kurrimine Beach intersection, therefore motorists heading to Innisfail or Cairns will be travelling via Innisfail Japoon Rd.

“(The highway) will be closed for a few more hours while the forensic crash unit investigates the crash,” said Senior Constable Moran.

“If you are coming through this area, we do ask that you do avoid this area if possible.”
