The traditional Boxing Day sales might be a little less hectic this year with an increase in popularity of pre-Christmas sales like Black Friday, but Cairns retailers are still expecting shoppers to come out in force.

Service providers are getting involved this year too, with half-price laser hair removal among the offerings.

Electrical goods, technology, homewares and linen are typically in big demand at the Boxing Day sales in Cairns, according to Cairns Central centre manager Louise Martin.

Boxing Day is traditionally one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and we anticipate this year will be no exception, particularly with popular stores such as Myer, Peter Alexander and Pandora,” Ms Martin said.

She said deals of 30 to 60 per cent off were available throughout many stores like Myer, Adairs, Bed, Bath N’ Table, and Sunglass Hut.

Health and beauty providers in the centre are also getting involved in the sales, with some offering skin treatments and laser hair removal at 50 per cent off on Boxing Day.

Earlville Shopping Town marketing manager Amber Nijssen said a number of stores throughout the centre would be offering up to 60 per cent off on selected items.

“It will be your usual promotions from the major retailers,” said Ms Nijssen.

“Some of the sales promotions that are newer to Australia, like Black Friday sales, have really taken off in recent years, and this has been absolutely amazing for our traders to have that activity earlier on in the year towards the end of November.

“We are still expecting a big trading day on Boxing Day,” she said.

Harvey Norman small appliances proprietor Kasey Warecke said the team there were expecting queues outside the store at opening time, with “ridiculous price points” for Boxing Day only on a selection of items across the store.

In small appliances, Ms Warecke said to look out for the biggest savings in floor care items and high end coffee machines.

“The focus of our Boxing Day sales is to clear (older) models … so people can expect to see ridiculously low price points on some items,” Ms Warecke said.

“It will be hectic, especially in the morning, as we will have significant deals and sale items on Boxing Day only so it will definitely be worthwhile coming on the day, especially if you are looking for big savings on smaller items and also on high-end coffee machines.”

A spokeswoman for DFO Cairns said all stores would be bringing out their best Boxing Day bargains with plenty of parking available at the centre.

“We have more than 60 stores that will be opening and offering Boxing Day Sales from 9am until 5pm on December 26,” she said.

Smithfield Shopping Centre marketing manager Jodie Scurrah said traders were gearing up for Boxing Day with a wide range of retailers, with savings up to 70 per cent on selected items at some retailers.

“We’re thrilled to offer our northern beaches community a convenient and exciting Boxing Day shopping experience right on their doorstep,” said Ms Scurrah.

“Our retailers have put together some amazing offers, allowing local residents to enjoy great deals without having to travel far from home.”

The centre will be open 10am until 4pm on Boxing Day.
