Atherton Tablelands residents will have better hospital facilities

The redevelopment of an FNQ hospital is impressive with a new emergency department among a slew of improvements at the site. FIND OUT WHAT’S IN STORE

WORK on a new emergency department, medical imaging, general ward, maternity ward and birthing service with private ensuite facilities, operating and endoscopy theatres at Atherton Hospital is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

There will be a new main hospital entrance providing safe patient drop-off and pick-up zones, improved mobility access and signage, a spacious waiting area and family-friendly zones to cater for visitors along with culturally appropriate areas.

There will be 56 beds.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman said there would be capacity for future expansion and the new facilities would be operational by June 2023.

“The critical element was to create space for future expansion, when the need arises to have more beds,” she said.

Stage three of the project involves redeveloping the existing ward block.

A new purpose-built community, allied and mental health building, a new helipad and an engineering services building opened in August 2020 as stage one of the $78.5m project.

The spokeswoman said while work continued, nobody would be turned away from the hospital.

“Anyone who presents to Atherton Hospital requiring medical treatment is provided free care and support,” she said.

“Those in the greatest need of emergency treatment will always be prioritised.

“The redevelopment will provide essential and modern health care facilities for the Tablelands community.

“Atherton Hospital continues to provide an exceptional level of care despite the challenges of growing demand and a national shortage of GPs.”
