After a morning of quiet remembrance for Anzac Day, clubs across Cairns were buzzing with punters trying to double their money in a round of two-up.

The Cairns RSL Club on the Esplanade opened their two-up ring just after 1pm on Friday, with more than 100 patrons crammed into the upper pavilion.

Anzac Day is the one day of the year it’s legal to play two-up, a traditional gambling game first played by service men and women during the First World War.

Cairns residents and visitors seized the opportunity on Friday, squeezing into pubs and RSL clubs across the region to play the beloved Anzac game.

Catering company manager and local wheelchair racing champion, Ben Griggs, tried his luck as the spinner, opting for heads on every toss.

“I do two-up every year,” Mr Griggs said.

In two-up the spinner tosses two coins into the air and punters bet on one of two results - two heads or two tails. One head and one tail means the spinner has to toss again.

“I love to come down to the Cairns RSL to have a good time, celebrate the Anzacs and remember the day,” he said.

Mr Griggs was the 2024 Cairns Marathon Wheelchair Half Marathon Champion.

“There’s a lot of people here that you see each year. It’s a great reason to come down and enjoy each other’s company, enjoy Australia,” Mr Griggs said.

“I love to have a bet and one of these days I’m going to throw three heads.

“It hasn’t happened yet, but I’ve still got a couple more hours, a couple more drinks, and I reckon I’ll be ready to go.”
