Cairns Cycling Club’s Brandon Hutton is on track to be a future star following a dominant display at the Townsville Cup on Wheels

CAIRNS two-wheel maestro Brandon Hutton has shown once again why he is one of the rising stars of Queensland cycling, taking out top honours at this year’s Townsville Cup on Wheels.

Hutton held off strong challenges from Townsville’s Ash O’Neill and fellow Cairns rider Richie Bates in the men’s headline event to claim the trophy.

Hutton, who represents Cairns Cycling Club, competed in a total of five events and, in a truly dominant display, ­bested the competition in all of them.

“It was pretty good,” he said.

“I did really well in all of my races.

“(The Cup on Wheels) definitely had some hard racing, but I’m just happy I was able to get away with the win.

“It was a great event to be part of.”

Hutton said he will now focus on training for the 2019 Queensland state titles, which will be held early next year.

“I set a state record at the ­titles this year, so I am ­looking forward to going down there and defending my title,” he said.

Townsville Cycle Club president Michael Saunders said the standard of competition was excellent, despite a drop in nominations for this year’s event

“It was really close racing (in the men’s Cup on Wheels),” Saunders said.

“They all came together in the final lap and Brandon was just a bit too strong. Cycling Queensland have got their eyes on Brandon as one of the future stars and he won every race he competed in.
