In a uniquely Territorian birthday celebration, locals are once again set to drop their dacks as The Ghan rolls through Livingstone Airstrip on Tuesday, March 11.
The tradition, which began in 2004 when the first Ghan train arrived in Darwin, is now 21 years old — meaning it’s time for a “21-bum salute”.
Back in 2004, a group of Livingstone locals decided to give the newly extended Ghan a proper Top End welcome, baring their backsides as the train passed.
What started as a small joke quickly turned into a full-fledged event, with around 400 people turning up to moon the train from what they dubbed “Badlands Siding”.
Now, the cheeky tradition continues, with long-time mooners and first-timers encouraged to “get their backside trackside” for the big occasion.
This year’s poster — created by long-time participant Ralph (Narelle), who has designed the 10th and 20th-anniversary versions — features the slogan “Bums with Guns” alongside an invitation for attendees to either drop their pants or bring a “bum on a stick” (two pink balloons tied together, for those feeling shy).
While numbers have fluctuated over the years, the spirit remains strong, with regulars ensuring the Ghan receives the same welcome it did two decades ago.
For those wanting to take part, the official mooning kicks off from 3pm onwards at Livingstone Airstrip.
Just remember: if you’re game, you better be bare.
