Marine authorities have issued a major update in the search for a fisherman who failed to return home from waters off the NSW coast.

Search and rescue mission for missing fisherman enters second day

A missing 64-year-old spear fisherman has been found alive after nearly 24 hours since he failed to return home.

Emergency services were called to Lennards Island, near Merimbula, on the south coast of New South Wales, following reports the fisherman had failed to return to shore after entering the water about 3.15pm on Saturday.

A co-ordinated search of the area, assisted by police, NSW Ambulance, Marine Rescue and NSW Surf Live Saving and the Marine Area Command, was carried out after the reported sighting.

The search was suspended about 5.30pm on Saturday due to poor light; however, resumed about 8am on Sunday.

Those searching for the man focused their efforts around Lennards Island and in water surrounding the Beowa National Park.

The man was found on some rocks about 9.15am on Sunday, on the coast within the Beowa National Park.

The man was uninjured and taken by boat to Snug Cove, Eden, where he was assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics.
