Woman’s body found after entering ocean in Far North Queensland early Friday

A woman’s body has been found in a popular tourist town after she did not resurface from the sea in the early hours of Friday.

The body of a woman has been recovered from a popular Queensland tourist town.

A search operation began in the early hours of Friday in the Far North Queensland town of Palm Cove, about 25km north of Cairns.

Police had been called to the Palm Cove Jetty about 2.30am when a woman entered the water but did not resurface.

A police spokeswoman said no details were available at this time about the circumstances.

Water police, surf lifesavers and local police were involved in the search. About 7am on Friday, Surf Life Saving Queensland volunteers found the body around the northern headland near Buchans Point Beach.

In a statement, police say investigations remain ongoing, but the incident is not being treated as suspicious.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
