Grandmother in custody after two children foudn dead in Coonabarabran

A grandmother has been arrested after two children were found dead during a welfare check.

The bodies of two boys, aged six and seven, were found in a home on Emu Lane in Coonabarabran just after 2pm on Monday, following reports of a concern for welfare.

A woman, 66, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital for further assessment where she remains under hospital guard.

The woman and children were known to each other, police said.

There is no ongoing threat to the community. Police are not looking for anyone else.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the horrific tragedy that unfolded this afternoon was a terrible tragedy and absolutely heartbreaking for these two children, the family and the entire community.

NSW Premier Chris Minns shared his condolences with the boys’ friends and family, as well as the wider comminuty.

“What has occurred is terrible and as a state we share in the community of Coonabarabran’s grief at the loss of two young boys who had their entire futures ahead of them,” he said.

“I can not begin to imagine the heartbreak their loved ones are currently feeling, including their family, friends, and teachers.

“I thank the local officers who attended the scene for their professionalism and bravery in the face of such a horrible event.”

Inquiries are ongoing.
