An off-duty police officer was allegedly assaulted by a woman after removing four children from a parked car on a 33C day.

Police were told the children, aged between 7 and 11, had been left inside a car at Bass Hill shopping centre car park about 4.40pm on Tuesday.

An off-duty sergeant removed the children from the unlocked vehicle.

Police alleged when a 50-year-old woman returned to the car the sergeant tried to speak with her, but she became aggressive and assaulted the officer before returning the children to the car and driving off.

Police later arrested the woman at a home in Condell Park and took her to Bankstown Police Station.

She was charged with assaulting a police officer without bodily harm, leaving children in a motor vehicle causing emotional distress.

The woman is due to appear before the Bankstown Local Court on January 15.
