Tributes have flowed for a woman killed by a falling tree branch in a horrific accident in Darwin’s Botanic Gardens, many remembering her for her “vibrant, adventurous spirit”.

Angelique De Wet, 28, has been identified as the victim of the horrific tragedy in the Northern Territory on Sunday.

She had only moved to Australia from South Africa six months before the tragedy.

Ms De Wet and her husband Collin Andrew were visiting Darwin’s Botanic Gardens on Sunday when a tree branch fell on the couple.

She was declared dead at the scene by paramedics while Mr Andrew was rushed to hospital with “significant injuries”.

Loved ones of Ms De Wet has described her as a “vibrant” person with “an adventurous spirit and a zest for life”.

“She was a beacon of joy and positivity,” The NT South African Association said on behalf of the De Wet-Andrew family.

“Her infectious laughter, warm smile, and kind-hearted nature endeared her to many.”

In a GoFundMe organised by the association, they said Mr Andrew was now battling with medical bills and rehabilitation while he begins to process the tragedy.

“Collin is now faced with the difficult task of moving forward amid this devastating loss, without the immediate support of family or friends in Australia,” it said in a statement.

The couple had moved to Australia earlier this year to “embark on a new chapter of their lives”.

“They were full of hope, embracing the opportunities, the freedom, and the natural beauty that Australia had to offer,” the Association said.

NT Police Acting Commander Peter Kennon said passers-by had witnessed the “confronting” scene on Sunday.

“There were certainly some people nearby who did witness the incident and rendered assistance immediately,” he said.

Chief Minister Natasha Fyles described it as an “absolute tragedy.”

“My heart goes out to her family, her friends, to those that witnessed and responded to that accident,” Ms Fyles said.
