A desperate search is underway for a man who was last heard from after sending a selfie atop a mountain in Tasmania.

Peter Rogers, 48, went for a planned hike in the Mount Roland Reserve about 45km south of Devonport and sent a selfie atop Mount Claude to family and friends at 7pm.

He has not been seen or heard from since.

Mr Rogers’ motorcycle was found in a car park near the start of a trail that leads into the mountains.

A police search and rescue operation is underway to find Mr Rogers, including aerial assistance from the Westpac Rescue helicopter and SES volunteers on the ground.

A Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said the track to Mount Claude could be difficult and required navigation and boulder scrambling.

The 5km track is recommended for experienced bushwalkers taking about two hours to complete on trails that were long, rough and very steep.

A police spokesperson said Mr Rogers was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt with a blue brimmed hat with sun protection on the back.

The spokesperson asked for people who encountered Mr Rogers or any items of interest in the area to contact Devonport Police Station.

A Triple Top Mountain Run event scheduled to take place in the area on Sunday could be impacted, event organisers will notify participants of any changes to the event.

A post on the event’s Facebook page said organisers were in communication with authorities and would provide an update at 1pm on Saturday.

“At this stage there is no changes to the event schedule, however we will obviously be guided by and adhere to any emergency services requests,” a spokesperson said.

“Our thoughts are with the missing person’s family.”
