A man accused of killing 21-year-old mother Mackenzie Anderson inside her Newcastle home has pleaded guilty to murder.
Tyrone Thompson, 25, returned before the Supreme Court on Tuesday, reportedly admitting to stabbing his ex-partner 78 times more than three years ago.
On March 25, 2022, police were called to Ms Anderson’s unit in Mayfield where they found the young mother bleeding outside her home.
She died at the scene and Thompson, who was 22 at the time, was later charged over her murder and allegedly breaching an AVO.
Thompson had only been out of jail for two weeks at the time and was on parole for a prior domestic attack on Ms Anderson.
Ms Anderson’s mum Tabitha Acret told Nine on Tuesday that lawmakers needed to do more to protect women in Australia.
“A piece of paper’s not going to do anything, an AVO doesn’t help … my daughter still got killed with one,” she said.
The grieving mother spoke to NewsWire in 2023, almost a year on from the tragedy, saying she wanted her daughter to be remembered as a fighter.
“She fought very, very hard,” Ms Acret said.
Ms Anderson’s son, who was one at the time his mother was killed, will turn five this April.
“We’re going to have to keep talking about this every year, like on Mother’s Day when he doesn’t have someone to buy a present for,” Ms Acret added.
Speaking to Nine on Tuesday, Ms Acret reiterated her plea for a monitoring system to be implemented that would send an alert if a potential perpetrator was in any flagged suburbs.
“It’s another consequence that might deter some people as well … because AVOs don’t really work,” she told NewsWire in 2023.
Thompson is set to face sentencing for murdering Ms Anderson at the end of April.
