Two people have been arrested after a shocking video emerged of a man allegedly discharging a firearm in Coal Point, in NSW’s Lower Hunter Region, before remarking “oops”.
Police allege a man was driving around and discharging a firearm in Coal Point in Lake Macquarie, filming himself with the gun and uploading it onto social media on the evening of Sunday May 4.
Footage obtained by 2GB shows the man, dressed in a hoodie, driving down the street and pointing the weapon out of the car window before it goes off while filming himself.
“Oops,” he said to the camera.
Speaking to media on Monday, Pot Stephens-Hunter Detective Ranald Urquhart said the man’s actions were “incredibly dangerous” and would be “treated very seriously”.
“It’s a very, very serious offence,” he said.
Detective Urquhart added sharing the clip onto social media was a “bit of a double-edged sword”.
“It can be used for some persons for notoriety but it’s also something that can assist police when it comes to offences and identifying offenders,” he told reporters.
Police believe the man twice shot the firearm out of the car window within the span of 24 hours.
Barista Bibek Subedi told 7News they heard gunshot sounds from the cafe where he works, but initially thought it was a “tyre blasting”.
“We went outside and we couldn’t see anything,” he told the outlet.
Officers were conducting covert surveillance of a white Mazda CX5 on Burley St in Tenambit shortly after 2.30am when the man allegedly fired a single shot from his gun into the air while the vehicle was parked.
There was no damage caused to properties and no injuries have been reported.
“With the assistance of Polair, the vehicle was followed to a home on Coal Point Rd, Coal Point,” NSW Police said in a statement.
Police attended the address at 5.15am and a 27-year-old man walked out of the house, where he was arrested without incident.
A short time later, authorities entered the home and arrested a 22-year-old woman in connection to the matter.
Police said they seized a shortened shotgun during the man’s arrest, which they believe is the same weapon used in the video.
Shortening a shotgun without authorisation is an illegal practice in NSW.
Detective Urquhart said police were “looking at a number of serious charges in relation to that firearm being fired”.
“We are conducting an investigation, canvassing for CCTV and further witnesses that may have seen or heard anything,” he said.
They remain in custody and no charges have been laid.
