Woman, 26 and boy, 11, dead after car crashes into tree in Echuca

The car burst into flames soon after crashing into a tree on a regional highway, bringing the state’s death toll to eight this year.

Two people are dead, including an 11-year-old boy, after a car crashed into a tree near Echuca, before bursting into flames.

Police believe a vehicle travelling along the Murray Valley Highway near Echuca left the road and struck a tree near Mt Terrick Road just after 12.30pm on Sunday.

There were three people inside the car which burst into flames soon after the crash.

A 26-year-old Moama woman died at the scene.

An 11-year-old Echuca boy was treated at the scene but died as a result of his injuries.

The driver, a 23-year-old Echuca man, was airlifted to hospital where he remains in a stable condition and is assisting police with their enquiries.

The exact circumstances surrounding the crash are yet to be determined at this stage and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate.
