The mother of a young boy crushed between two cars in Melbourne’s west has revealed her son’s road to recovery from his horrific injuries.
Huseyin Pek, 8 and his three-year-old brother Burak were playing in the laneway of their grandparents’ home in Braybrook on September 26 when they were struck by a car.
The younger boy luckily escaped with minor injuries.
But Huseyin became pinned between the bull bar of the moving vehicle and the back of a second car, sustaining multiple serious injuries.
Huseyin has undergone seven surgeries over the two weeks since the incident, with his mother, Demet Aydin, speaking on the incident for the first time.
“(He’s a) little boy, but he’s strong,” she told 7 News.
“I thought I lost him.”
Graphic CCTV footage captured the moment Huseyin and Burak were suddenly struck by the car while playing soccer in the laneway, as well as the rescue operation to free Huseyin from being trapped between the two vehicles.
The family started a GoFundMe campaign on September 28 to assist with the costs associated with Huseyin’s treatment at the Royal Children’s Hospital while he remained in a critical condition.
“These funds will be used towards the medical bills and stay for the parents of Huseyin as they are sticking to their son’s side as he fights for his life,” the family wrote in a statement.
Mrs Aydin said her son was now talking and moving, though his recovery would be slow.
“He’s eating by himself, he’s doing schoolwork … but he’s not confident to see himself still in the mirror,” she said.
“Every single day he’s getting stronger, and it’s still ongoing.”sons
Doctors have said it may be another 6-12 months before Huseyin fully recovers.
The driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old Braybrook man, was charged with dangerous driving cause serious injury, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving while unlicensed, careless driving and driving in a dangerous manner and is due to return to court next year.
