Horror as man allegedly stabbed in back outside Sydney light rail

NSW Police have extradited a man from Victoria over allegations he allegedly stabbed a stranger who was walking by a light rail stop in Sydney’s CBD.

A man has been extradited to New South Wales after he allegedly stabbed a stranger in the back while walking outside a light rail in Sydney.

Emergency services were called to Darling Rd in Haymarket about 4.20pm on Sunday following reports of an assault.

Police were told a 22-year-old man was walking near the Chinatown light rail stop when he was allegedly stabbed in the back.

Paramedics treated the 22-year-old at the scene.

He was then taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation launched into the incident.

Victoria Police detectives later arrested a 40-year-old man in Broadmeadows, Victoria over the alleged stabbing.

NSW police successfully applied for the man’s extradition to NSW.

Police will allege the men were not believed to be known to each other.

Upon arriving in the state, the 40-year-old was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and reckless wounding.

He was refused bail to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
