An elderly man has been scammed out of nearly $10,000 following a phone call.
The 94-year-old man from Mount Waverley in Melbourne’s southeast received a call from someone purporting to be from a telecommunications company on September 19.
The caller asked for the elderly man’s bank details over the phone and told him to leave his bank cards in a letterbox to be reissued at a later time.
The offender then stole the cards and spent $9000 on four new iPhones at a Malvern East store and another store in Chadstone later that same afternoon.
He also tried to buy $4500 worth of electronics at another Chadstone store, however, this transaction was declined.
The offender also tried to take out money using the 94-year-old’s cards at ATM’s on High Street in Ashburton and Hamilton Place in Mount Waverley.
Police released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with inquiries, and have urged anyone with information to come forward.
