Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has won re-election to lead Queensland’s largest local council for another four years.

In the closely-watched Brisbane mayor’s race, Mr Schrinner beat Labor’s Tracey Price and Greens candidate Jonathan Sriranganathan to keep the mayor’s office in LNP hands.

As of 8.25pm Saturday night, Mr Schrinner led with 46.8 per cent of first preferences, or more than 111,076 votes, easily ahead of Ms Price, who booked 26.1 per cent of first preferences, or 62,022 votes.

Mr Sriranganathan trailed in third position with 49,901 votes.

Mr Schrinner issued a statement on Saturday night claiming victory.

“I am humbled residents have chosen me to continue as lord mayor so my team and I can continue to keep Brisbane moving forward,” he said.

The Lord Mayor role has been held by the LNP since 2004, when former premier Campbell Newman won.

Brisbane City Council is Queensland’s largest council with 26 seats, or wards, and a total enrolment of 845,501 voters.

Coming into Saturday’s vote, the LNP held 19 wards, Labor held five and the Greens one.

Fourteen seats are required to win.

On the Gold Coast, the state’s second largest council, incumbent Tom Tate was easily returned as mayor.

“I thought I’d go into council to stir it up ... I never thought I’d be a politician, but I guess winning the fourth term kind of makes me a politician,” Mr Tate said.

“Thank you is such a small word, but I mean every syllable of it.”

Former LNP state leader Lawrence Springborg was returned as mayor of Goondiwindi unopposed, but in Townsville long term mayor Jenny Hill was in trouble.

Across Queensland, some 1.1 million people voted across 77 local councils.

Counting continues.
