Torquay has handed Drysdale its first loss of the season, and in doing so has claimed top spot on the BFL ladder.
Accurate kicking was not enough to get the win for the Hawks, with Torquay running out 19.10 (124) to 16.5 (101) victors.
Torquay coach Dom Gleeson said it was a great preparation game for finals football.
“Even though the ground was wet and a bit muddy, it was probably one of the best games of footy I’ve seen at this level,” he said.
“Drysdale are a great side, they move it so well and they’re really clean with it, and they kicked so straight so we knew we needed to be clinical going forward.
“It’s great that we have top spot now, but there’s a big game against Modewarre next week so we need to be switched on for that as well, these games will give us a great warm up going into finals.”
Hawks forward Mat Hebbard kicked another five goals to lead all scorers, while Nathan Mifsud had four for the Tigers.
Drysdale co-coach Ben Carmichael said Torquay played the conditions better on the day.
“That type of conditions really suit how we want to play, we’re a high pressure side and we try to get numbers up to the contest,” he said.
“They probably played the conditions better and took some of the chances that were presented to them.
“We want to win every game we play, but now we’ll need some results to go our way to get top spot, so if we can finish top three and get a double chance we’ll be relatively happy.”
Barwon Heads v Queenscliff
A nine-goal second quarter set up a dominant win for Barwon Heads, with the Seagulls running out 16.14 (110) to 5.15 (45) victors against the Coutas.
Key forward Nathan Brown returned to Barwon Heads and kicked five goals, but mid-season recruit Tony Armstrong did not make his much-anticipated debut in the win.
Geelong Amateur v Anglesea
Max Hungerford’s stunning after the siren goal has all but ended Anglesea’s finals quest.Ammos took a strong hold over fifth position in the BFL thanks to Hungerford’s heroics, thwarting a comeback from the Roos in a four-point thriller.
Newcomb v Modewarre
Four goals to forward Connor Joseph helped Modewarre to a 14.11 (95) to 8.12 (60) victory against Newcomb.
The 35-point victory helped the Warriors lock away a top four spot on the BFL ladder, with 12 points separating themselves and Geelong Amateur in fifth.
Modewarre kicked seven goals in the second quarter to push out the lead to 29 points at the main break.
Portarlington v Ocean Grove
The recruitment of former AFL captain Nathan Jones was not enough to get Portarlington its first win of the season, losing to Ocean Grove in a 20.14 (134) to 9.6 (60).
Jones joined the ‘first kick, first goal’ club for the Demons, and finished with two majors in the loss.
Kye Annand kicked seven majors for Ocean Grove, while James Paterson kicked six in the win.
