POLICE in Croatia are investigating the apparent rape of a 23-year-old Australian woman in the resort town of Makarska.
The woman has told police she was raped on the beach in the early hours of Monday morning.
A Croatian police statement said the woman had arrived at the Makarska town hospital’s emergency department seeking assistance at 2.30am. It is not clear which day the woman presented at the hospital.
Emergency room staff alerted police and the woman told them she had been raped by an unknown man. The police statement said she had been under the influence of alcohol and could provide only limited details about her assailant.
The woman received treatment and is undergoing further medical tests and police have launched an investigation.
Makarska is a popular seaside town on the Makarska Riviera between the tourist hot spots of Duborvnik and Split on Croatia’s Dalmatian coast, facing the Adriatic Sea.
