Australian Dairy Conference brings cows to Broadbeach

Rain, hail, or shine, Australian dairy farmers rise at dawn – even on their holidays. Find out why they brought two cows to the beach this morning.

Instead of pulling on their boots to trudge out to a paddock, dairy farmers donned their activewear for a milk run at Broadbeach in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Hundreds of hard-working Australian dairy farmers were on the Gold Coast for the annual Australian Dairy Conference.

“We’ve got about 650 members of the Australian Dairy Industry, so this morning about 150 farmers have registered to come down here for an early morning run,” conference marketing manager Natalie Geard said.

All parts of the supply chain were on show at the event, with Beaudesert producers Thomas and Cynthia Brook introducing cows Macy and Lucy, while the Bega group brought along some dairy treats like yoghurt and flavoured milk.

Ms Geard said it was the first time the conference had been held on the Gold Coast, so most of the farmers were keen to enjoy the beaches — even if the Sunshine State didn’t live up to its name on Thursday.

“They’re all early risers anyway, so we thought we’d get them out of bed early and make the most of their time,” she said.
