Victoria will be the last state in Australia to get a container deposit scheme, but it will not be introduced until 2023.
The reform is part of the government’s long-awaited “circular economy” policy to reshape the state’s problem-plagued recycling system, with further details to be announced later today.
Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio said the container deposit scheme “will reduce the amount of plastic and waste that goes to landfill”.
“It will give a second, third and fourth life to beverage containers. It will reduce litter. And it will mean businesses have an ongoing source of recycling material to turn into new products,” she said.
While the 2023 start date is after the next state election, Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien also committed this month to introducing a similar scheme.
