Werribee Centrals sent a strong message to the competition that it will be a force to reckon with this season, thrashing Inverleigh by 24 goals.

The Centurions proved they will be a major premiership threat again, controlling the game to secure a 52-28 win at Inverleigh Recreation Reserve.

The domination allowed Centrals to rotate players through different sections of the court without losing control of the game.

Four different shooters were used throughout the contest and all were accurate.

Caitlin Hendrickson was the dominant player on the court for the Centurions, as

she provided plenty of feed from the midcourt.

Jenni Rothery, a new addition to the team, was outstanding under the scoring ring.

Teagan Madden battled hard for the Hawks in defence and youngsters Riley Baker and Hayley Wilson showed they have potential with encouraging displays in the midcourt.

Thomson had little trouble overcoming Bell Post Hill in a crushing 72-9 victory, with new

addition Taylor Schramm impressing in her debut with the Tigers.

Corio let a strong first half lead slip away as North Geelong powered home to win 48-37, with Bree Hearn dominating the defensive court, while Cassidy Nelson controlled the scoring ring after halftime.

Bannockburn provided a disciplined team effort to comfortably defeat Geelong West 69-22.

Kaylah Nicol was outstanding in setting up scoring opportunities for the Tigers, with

Rosie Shannahan taking full advantage under the ring.

Belmont Lions were valiant early against the might of East Geelong, before the Eagles

pulled away to win 51-20, with Janelle Baker turning in an eye-catching debut for the winners.

Composure shone through for Torquay under pressure in a nailbiting round 1 win over Ocean Grove.

The Tigers led at every break against the Grubbers, but never by more than three goals as both sides fought through a physical season opener that ended 42-39, in Torquays favour.

Torquay coach Sonia Harris said while her side was on top most of the afternoon, they just couldn’t break away.

“It felt like we were up two or it was a draw the whole day, so we grinded away and got the win, we are really happy about that,” she said.

“The biggest thing I was happy with was their composure in round 1. It was a real nailbiter and we did hang on but I thought we confidently held on.

“It was ours to lose if anything and if something didn’t go our way, we moved on really quickly and got on with the next play.”

Skipper Jess Standfield stood tall for the Tigers in defence, repelling constant attacks, while Emily Moroney and Kelsey Ollis fired for Ocean Grove.

The Tigers finished second on last year’s ladder to an undefeated Geelong Amateur and Harris said the round 1 win was a good sign for the season.

“You find out where you are at in a tough game in round 1 and if you can get the win, you are definitely happy with that,” she said.

Elsewhere, Barwon Heads held off Drysdale, Newcomb proved too strong for Queenscliff, Modewarre thumped Anglesea by 46 goals and Geelong Amateur eased past Portarlington.

Despite two injuries midgame and three players missing due to Covid-related issues, Newtown & Chilwell prevailed in a dominant 33-goal win over Bell Park.

For coach Jason Woolley, the 72-39 win was an impressive one in trying conditions.

“That (injuries) changed the dynamic of the game for us a little bit,” he said.

“It was nice to get that performance out of the way.”

Like the majority of games, especially in round one, it was a fast, even contest early.

Newtown & Chilwell managed to stem the attack from Bell Park and get out to a strong lead.

“We absorbed that punch well early and then we were able to build as the game went on,” Woolley said.

The Eagles were clinical in front of goals, consistently getting deep feeds into the goal circle to make life easy for their shooters.

It was their defensive structures that stood out, however, particularly making it hard for Bell Park to enter its goal-third.

It is a part of the Eagles’ game that has been a focus for the side, Woolley said.

In other results, Colac pulled out a tight one goal win over St Joseph’s, 39-38.

St Albans proved too strong for St Mary’s 54-39 and South Barwon enjoyed a dominant 78-12 win over Grovedale.

Leopold and Geelong West will face off Sunday from 1:45pm at Leopold Memorial Reserve.
