Jack Buckley’s pull of his jumper as he celebrated a late goal to secure St Joseph’s win over Newtown & Chilwell on Sunday showed how much the win meant to the club as it celebrated its 50-year anniversary.
The goal topped off an impressive day for Buckley, who finished with 32 disposals at 65.6 per cent efficiency, 17 contested possessions and five tackles.
Oliver Hanneysee booted a game-high four goals for Joeys, while for Newtown & Chilwell, Ned Harris starred with 29 disposals, 18 contested possessions and six inside 50s.
JOEYS END LOSING STREAK IN IMPRESSIVE FASHION
St Joseph’s coach Paul Carson has credited his side for standing up in a “huge day for the club” as it held on for a nine-point win at home over rival Newtown & Chilwell.
Joeys celebrated their 50-year anniversary with a past players day on Sunday, with fans turning out in big numbers to watch the side prevail 17.7 (109) to 15.10 (100).
“(It was a) huge day for the club, it started (Saturday) night with the 50th anniversary dinner, we had 500 past and present players and celebrated the history of our footy club,” Carson said. “(I’m) just proud of the boys on the big stage, as far as local footy goes, that we were able to get the choccies today.
“Really proud of the boys, we were challenged at times, we wrestled momentum back and then we were able to score again.”
Despite a quick two-goal to zero start by Newtown & Chilwell, St Joseph’s was able to stem the tide. And after a flurry of goals late in the second-quarter, the home side led at the main break by 12 points.
Eagles star forward Lachlan Bond was moved to defence and defender Braden Hocking went forward to start the third term, with Newtown & Chilwell booting two majors in two minutes to flip the game on its head.
But St Joseph’s answered in the second-half of the term to lead at the final change, with the fourth quarter a rollercoaster affair.
A Jack Buckley major running over the 50m arc after giving some candy to the man on the mark sealed the deal for St Joseph’s, his pull of the jumper as he celebrated a sign of what the win meant.
“It was a ripping goal and I don’t think anyone actually saw that coming,” Carson said.
“What a fantastic finish and you could see how much this weekend means to our footy club, it was really important.”
Eagles coach Damien McMahon praised the standard of the game, but said his side had plenty to work on as it looked towards a clash with St Mary’s next weekend.
“Lots of positives, it was a really good game, it was probably as good a GFL game I’ve seen this year,” McMahon said. “We didn’t play consistently well enough for any length of time, hence why we could never really get the scoreboard in our favour for too many minutes.”
LARA SECURES FIRST WIN OF ITS SEASON
Lara was able to overcome a flurry of St Albans goals to record its first win of the season in the wet and wintry conditions at home.
The Cats trailed the Supersaints by as much as 18 points in the final term before coming home with the strong breeze to win 14.11 (95) to 12.15 (87) at Lara Recreation Reserve at Saturday.
Lara coach Shayne Stone said to overcome the adversity on the day was “massive” for the club.
“We spoke at three quarter time about not letting another close game slip, so to overturn that deficit and get that win is so massive,” he said.
“You wonder exactly how much a win actually means in the scheme of what you’re doing, and it was one of those ones where if we had let it slip, it would’ve been really hard to pick one up.
“It’s reward for the work you put in, and it shows the young guys that what we’re doing is worth doing.”
Forward Dylan Jose snapped a goal around the body to tie the contest up for Lara, before star Mitch Day took a contested mark and kicked truly with about five minutes left to take the lead.
St Albans coach Alex Tortora said the Supersaints did not take their chances with the breeze in the third quarter.
“We probably needed to put a little more scoreboard pressure on going into the last term,” he said.
“Three or four more goals in the bank probably would’ve made me feel a bit better, but we didn’t really take our chances.”
