After 11 years, popular CBD Mexican restaurant Mejico is closing its doors

The popular restaurant is the latest in a string of restaurants, like Tetsuya’s and Bistrot 916, forced to close as the building it occupies is redeveloped.

Small business insolvencies reach record numbers

After 11 years, Mexican restaurant Mejico has been forced to call last tequilas on it’s Pitt Street location.

The popular restaurant is the latest in a string of restaurants, like Tetsuya’s and Bistrot 916, forced to close as the building it occupies is redeveloped.

However unlike venues like Tetsuya’s, the owners have decided this isn’t the end for Mejico.

Chief Operations Office Karen Westfield told The Daily Telegraph they are frantically looking for another site and hope to open something, even if not permanent, before Christmas.

“There is a lot going on in hospitality at the moment and a lot of people are doing it tough, but for us, it’s not that story. We have a thriving business and if the building wasn’t being knockdown we would be there for years to come.”

“We just have to pivot and find a new home.”

Mejico, with it’s guacamole smashed tableside and Australia’s finest and largest selection of tequila and mezcal, has been a Sydney success story. It’s joins Indu and Kid Kyoto as one of three restaurants run by The Sam Prince Hospitality Group.

Westfield added they are looking for locations across the CBD and into the suburbs for the next iteration of Mejico.

“Mejico has a strong future and dare I sare, has become an iconic spot in Sydneysider hearts so we aren’t giving up on it,” she said.

To celebrate the end of the Pitt St era, the restaurant is throwing plenty of parties including $10 cocktail days, win your meal on us and special tequila tastings.
