Regional peak body AFL Barwon has read the riot act to a “small minority” within the local footy community over their disrespectful use of social media.

In an email to AFL Barwon’s “club stakeholders” last Thursday, a small group had not adhered to the peak body’s by-laws in relation to unauthorised media statements.

No club shall allow any of its officers or members to make any statement to the media in connection with any policies or acts of the commission, independent tribunal or under-18s committee without permission, according to AFL Barwon’s 2024 handbook.

Offending parties can be fined, suspended or expelled from the league.

In addition, under the National Community Football Policy Handbook, a person must not talk negatively on social media about a controlling body, its employees, corporate partners, broadcaster partners, sponsors or fans.

It comes after AFL Barwon highlighted bad behaviour in local netball competitions, from players, coaches and umpires alike, with suspended players during games engaging with team benches.

“Community sport is a passionate space, and differing opinions and perspectives are natural,” AFL Barwon said in the email on June 26.

“We welcome respectful discussion and the constructive challenging of the status quo, but this must be done within the rules and with consideration for others in our sporting community.

“We encourage clubs to continue promoting the games and the outstanding work being done across the region, but ask that all communications, including those on social media, be carried out with respect for all.”

It also stressed the importance of respect when contacting people within the community online.

AFL Barwon encouraged all clubs to promote and celebrate important achievements on social media, positively contribute to the growth of the game and uphold respect for all members of our community.

“Unfortunately, a small minority within our region have not acted with these intentions,” the email read.

It reminded clubs of a by-law relating to unauthorised media statements, which reportedly exists to protect all clubs from public commentary regarding the policies and actions of AFL Barwon.

“We take this rule seriously and strongly encourage clubs to remind members in official capacities of the consequences and potential sanctions for any breaches,” it said.

“We also draw your attention to the AFL Social Media Policy, which outlines the standards expected of all members when using social media in connection with community football and netball.

“Adherence to this policy is essential to maintaining a respectful environment across our platforms.”

AFL Barwon declined to make further comment when contacted by this masthead.
