With a view to improving emergency medical situations in remote Northern Territory, 30 Aboriginal Health Practitioner students have been given hands-on experience in adult and paediatric emergency care.

the students underwent two days of comprehensive training this week, delivered by CareFlight and the Batchelor Institute.

The first day focused on adult resuscitation and trauma management, while the second covered care for infants and paediatrics.

CareFlight spokesman Dean Blackney said the training would benefit remote communities.

“This training strengthens the capabilities of Indigenous healthcare professionals and directly contributes to improving healthcare outcomes in remote communities,” he said.

“Aboriginal Health Practitioners bring unique local knowledge and experience, which is vital to the future of remote healthcare.”

A Bachelor of Institute spokesperson also hailed the course.

“We are proud to support our students as they gain practical, life-saving skills that will benefit their communities,” they said.

“This training not only reinforces their professional development but also their dedication to serving their people.”

The course follows an event held by CareFlight earlier this month, in which Indigenous students across the Top End were invited to meet and greet emergency workers in Darwin.

Northern operations general manager Jodie Mills told the NT News her organisation had developed a strong bond with remote communities.

“We absolutely understand that we’re taking patients from community – it’s a big thing for them to come into the hospital, sometimes for a very long period,” she said.

“We want to make sure we can make that process as comfortable as we possibly can.”
